Short-term walking physical training and changes in body hydration status, B-type natriuretic peptide and C-reactive protein levels in compensated co…

2008

BACKGROUND: Congestive heart failure (CHF) is associated with decreased exercise tolerance, alterations in body fluid balance and activation of neurohumoral and inflammatory pathways. Physical training, despite the contraindications of the past, is recommended for its beneficial effects on exercise capacity and quality of life. We investigate the effects of a short-term (ten weeks) walking physical training program (PT) on body hydration state (HS), B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. METHODS AND RESULTS: 22 patients with CHF (mean age 62.7+/-4.8 years, 15 men, mean ejection fraction 38.9+/-3.6%, NYHA class II-III), were enrolled. Eleven patients were rando…

B-type natriuretic peptide trend predicts clinical significance of worsening renal function in acute heart failure

2019

Aims In acute heart failure (AHF), relationships between changes in B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and worsening renal function (WRF) and its prognostic implications have not been fully determined. We investigated the relationship between WRF and a decrease in BNP with in-hospital and 1-year mortality in AHF. Methods and results The Acute Kidney Injury NGAL Evaluation of Symptomatic heart faIlure Study (AKINESIS) was a prospective, international, multicentre study of AHF patients. Severe WRF (sWRF) was a sustained increase of >= 44.2 mu mol/L (0.5 mg/dL) or >= 50% in creatinine, non-severe WRF (nsWRF) was a non-sustained increase of >= 26.5 mu mol/L (0.3 mg/dL) or >= 50% in cr…

Decongestion discriminates risk for one-year mortality in patients with improving renal function in acute heart failure

2021

Aims Improving renal function (IRF) is paradoxically associated with worse outcomes in acute heart failure (AHF), but outcomes may differ based on response to decongestion. We explored if the relationship of IRF with mortality in hospitalized AHF patients differs based on successful decongestion. Methods and results We evaluated 760 AHF patients from AKINESIS for the relationship between IRF, change in B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), and 1-year mortality. IRF was defined as a >= 20% increase in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) relative to admission. Adequate decongestion was defined as a >= 40% decrease in last measured BNP relative to admission. IRF occurred in 22% of pat…

Natriuretic peptide system expression in murine and human submandibular salivary glands: a study of the spatial localisation of ANB, BNP, CNP and the…

2019

AbstractThe natriuretic peptide (NP) system comprises of three ligands, the Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP), Brain Natriuretic peptide (BNP) and C-type Natriuretic peptide (CNP), and three natriuretic peptide receptors, NPRA, NPRB and NPRC. Here we present a comprehensive study of the natriuretic peptide system in healthy murine and human submandibular salivary glands (SMGs). We show CNP is the dominant NP in mouse and human SMG and is expressed together with NP receptors in ducts, autonomic nerves and the microvasculature of the gland, suggesting CNP autocrine signalling may take place in some of these glandular structures. These data suggest the NP system may control salivary gland funct…

Long-term serial kinetics of N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide and carbohydrate antigen 125 for mortality risk prediction following acute hea…

2017

Aim: Baseline values of N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) predict all-cause mortality in acute heart failure (AHF). However, there is limited information about the added prognostic benefit of using longitudinal values, and how this predictive ability is modified when modelling together. The aim of this study was to determine the mutually-adjusted association between the longitudinal trajectories of NT-proBNP and CA125 with all-cause mortality after an episode of AHF. Methods and results: We included 946 consecutive patients discharged for AHF. NT-proBNP and CA125 were measured at each physician-patient encounter (median (interquartile…

Comparison of N-terminal proB-type natriuretic peptide levels at different stages of visceral leishmaniosis and in patients with chronic kidney disea…

2018

N-terminal proB-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) may be a useful marker in canine leishmaniosis (CanL). The aim was to compare NT-proBNP in dogs at different LeishVet stages of CanL and with idiopathic chronic kidney disease (CKD). Dogs diagnosed with CanL or CKD and a group of healthy dogs were included (group A, five normal dogs; group B, six dogs LeishVet 1-2; group C, 13 dogs LeishVet 3-4; group D, six dogs with CKD). NT-proBNP was higher (P0.001) in group C (7.616 pmol/l, interquartile range (IQR) 3537-10,000 pmol/l) than in group A (293 pmol/l, IQR 257-373), group B (388.5 pmol/l, IQR 324-793) and group D (740 pmol/l, IQR 557-962 pmol/l). Analysis of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide in patients with acute coronary syndromes

2009

Background The N-terminal portion of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) has been identified as an indicator of prognosis in different cardiovascular diseases. The objective of this study was to determine the utility of measuring plasma NT-proBNP levels in patients with acute coronary syndromes. Methods and results We studied 66 patients admitted in our division for acute coronary syndromes. Patients underwent a venous blood sample within 24 h from the admission to determine NT-proBNP levels. Increasing plasma levels of NT-proBNP (in tertiles) was associated with a greater history of hypertension and current smoking, whereas biochemical parameters were associated with higher level of crea…
